Cedar strip canoe forms
Jul 26, Now the plans are lofted, or you have purchased plans, and you have hull outlines on a large sheet of paper. Since the cross section of the hull is symmetrical, only half of the hull shape is needed for each form. I cut three small windows in the plans, each about ¼” X 1/2: at the top of the vertical center line.
While 6-oz. fiberglass is the most used fabric by cedar strip canoe builders, some use Kevlar, carbon or polyester fabrics for enhancing strength, abrasion resistance or visual drama. Once the canoe builder laminates the exterior of the hull, the boat comes off the building forms and the builder invests a day or two preparing.

Description:My challenges were caused mostly by applying the varnish in outside. The builder looking for a shop project can burn an entire day hand-crafting a single canoe seat. Copper tubing with two coats of varnish provide spacing for the seat hangers. Once again make some test runs to adjust your set up. The thwart was hand-carved using quarter round rasps and a draw knife. The end of the thwart was split so I attached a perpendicular length of wood with epoxy to add strength. A string stretched from end to end can help with alignment.
