Budge the Budgerigar : The classic tales of an Australian budgerigar
It was in 1969 that I started drawing Budge the Budgerigar while I was in high school. I kept drawing it until I finished school and then all the drawings went in a box and stayed with me as a treasured possession. I intended one day to get back to it but that took over forty-five years.Budge is based on the budgerigars we had as pets when I was growing up in Adelaide. We had a green one for awhile then some canaries (they were messy), a light blue one then the one Budge is more connected with, our blue budgerigar.Budge started off in a cage but very quickly learnt how to escape and fly around outside to his favourite tree. His owners did not really care, he always came back to his cage to sleep and eat seed. Budge's hobbies were horse racing (he was proud of the fact that he was always able to choose winners) and his cellar which contained expensive wines (or so he thought). In reality, a bird size wine bottle only contains about a teaspoon and unbeknown to Budge, it was non-alcoholic. He is a bird after all!

Is it a female budgerigar or a male budgerigar?
Determining the sex of a budgerigar can be challenging without a DNA test or observing specific behaviors. However, there are some general physical characteristics that can help differentiate between male and female budgerigars. Male budgerigars typically have a blue cere (the fleshy area above the beak), while females have a brown or white cere. Additionally, males tend to have a more vibrant coloration and may exhibit more vocal and active behaviors compared to females.
-
Is it a budgerigar hen or a budgerigar cock?
To determine if a budgerigar is a hen or a cock, you would need to look at the bird's cere, which is the fleshy area above its beak where the nostrils are located. In adult budgerigars, males typically have a blue or purplish cere, while females have a brown or beige cere. By examining the color of the cere, you can determine if the budgerigar is a hen (female) or a cock (male).

Budgerigar or hamster?
It ultimately depends on your lifestyle and preferences. Budgerigars are social birds that require interaction and mental stimulation, while hamsters are solitary animals that are more independent. If you have the time and space to provide social interaction for a budgerigar, it can be a rewarding pet. On the other hand, if you prefer a low-maintenance pet that can be left alone for periods of time, a hamster may be a better fit for you.

Can an older budgerigar live together with a young budgerigar?
Yes, older budgerigars can live together with young budgerigars. It is important to introduce them gradually and monitor their interactions to ensure they get along. Older budgerigars can sometimes be territorial, so providing enough space, toys, and perches can help reduce any potential conflicts. With proper introductions and supervision, older and younger budgerigars can coexist peacefully and even form strong bonds.
-
How does a budgerigar place its foot on another budgerigar?
A budgerigar places its foot on another budgerigar by gently stepping onto the other bird's body or perch. They use their feet to maintain balance and stability while interacting with other budgerigars. This behavior is often seen during social interactions, suchjson as grooming or playing, and is a way for budgerigars to communicate and bond with each other. It is a natural and instinctive behavior for these social birds.

How can you teach a budgerigar to eat vegetables and build trust?
To teach a budgerigar to eat vegetables and build trust, start by introducing small pieces of vegetables alongside their regular food. Gradually increase the amount of vegetables and decrease the amount of regular food over time. Additionally, spend time with your budgerigar, talking to them softly and offering treats to build trust. Be patient and consistent in your approach, and eventually, your budgerigar will become more comfortable with both eating vegetables and interacting with you.
